Can I use a zener diode to force the output of a 25mhz crystal osc
from 5v to 3.3v?

A crystal osc shouldnt really have a voltage rating, so any 25mhz crystal should work at 3.3v or 5v .

The crystal is a "crystal oscillator", it has 4 pins?

Dont think a zener will work somehow, id be surprised if they can switch fast enough... Mat

And the other question is if it is permissible to short
circuit the osc' output, which is what clipping would
do? ....

sorry for taking so long to reply, been kinda busy! but short circuiting the osc' output just sounds like trouble, why you considering it?

A straight forward resistor divider will do the job.
