Checked it out. Works great. Fast. Faster than my Java bootloader using a Win32 DLL with a Java JNI, Java Native Interface, wrapper to talk to mpusbapi.dll.

Glad you like it, I was actually thinking that it was rather slow, as I hadn't done any optimisations on the code yet! Glad it works for someone else Mat

Hi, and welcome!
The Bootloader is an entirely software way of reprogramming the PIC18F4550, as long as the correct software is programmed via a physical programmer initially on the PIC (i.e. the bootloader).
The circuit is the same design as the original basic usb article. You will require a normal PIC programmer to program the bootloader software onto the device first.
You can use this software to reprogram the device however it is mainly intended for a design in use by a customer and not to program development software with, as it allows no methods of debugging the code.
If you could be more specific with what you need then I might be able to help further.

The bootloader probably isnt what you are looking for, have you done any PIC programming before? You will probably need a PIC programmer, see the links section for some examples.

Yes you have to program the bootloader onto the PIC with a programmer initially, after you have programmed it once, you can update the code via the USB. Mat
